Anybody have experience in off-roading in a RWD-only truck? What kind of modifications did you perform? How much did it cost? I am interested in pursuing building an off-road ''lite'' out of my 1995 Dodge Dakota in the future.

Please refrain from listing that off-road trailing is for 4x4 is only, as that is simply not true. The Paris-Dakar rally has a 4x2 class in it, who run nearly as fast as the 4x4 guys.

well first l wouldnt realy suggest 4 wheelin in a 2 wheel drive but if ur guna do it u should in vest in a posi rear end and a good set of tires and a lift which will cost u around 3 grand. and the ralley cars in the dakar are ment for speed and a little then ur dakota. also they dont have to dell with having to slow down for things like ull have to.

2 WD is fine. a locker would be a nice thing to have. 4x4 gets u out of real gnarly stuff, such a s snow or mud. u have to drive a little smarter w 2wd. for example. dont ever stop in soft sand or deep mu or snow. the trick to 2wd wheelin is to jus t keep moving. again. if u can afford to install a TRUE locker on the rear axle, you'de have a huge advantage. kinda like toyota trd is have as an option. oh & airing down ur tires makes a huge difference in sand & rock crwling. it is all about technique. drive smart. not hard.

There are alot of 2 wheel drive trucks that run the baja 1000.Almost all of there chase trucks are 2 wheel drive.They also have 2 wheel class in score.There are many different kinds of 4 wheeling.The things you describe a vw bug can do.It really depends on what you want to do.You also have to remember that a 2x4 can go places but the 4x4 will do the same and more!Hey let your imagination fly!!!Go for it!!!!

teh only thing l would do is weld the pinion gear so that the rear end is a true posi.. Everything else is suspension and tires which is all up to what you want! Take care and have fun!
