l have an automatic neon and was wondering what would be involved in converting it to a manual 5 speed instead of the 3 speed automatic. If anyone has any tips or has done this and could help me out, any help would be appreciated.

l have done 3 of these before ,the best thing u can do is go out & try & find a good parts car ,we do on all the ones we change over because its almost impossible to go to a salvage yard & pick over & get all the parts u need for doing this,we get more lucky finding a blown up neon that was a 5 speed then u have everything u need,you have to swap the pedals out plus some of the wiring harness & the transmission brackets plus the mounts,and this gets really expensive to do,i did one from going back & forth to a junk yard for parts & l swore id never do any other one without owning a parts car,once u get another car though its fairly easy to do,it takes about a week to do taking ur time to do this & u will be driving it,but be sure & use a new clutch & pressure plate & flywheel if needed,other wise you,ll be pulling it all back out to replace it,if u have a parts car to work with this way u have everything needed for doing this,other wise it will run u too much & nickle & dime u to death to get this job done,good luck with it.

You should do a search over at neons.org. l am pretty sure it is well documented on doing a manual swap.

Besides what dodge man said. You will need 5spd axles, if u have ABS just adds to find axles. You have two choices of gear ratios, the 3.55 & 3.94 tranny. Its alot easier to find the 3.55 because it was used with SOHC neons. The 3.94 is used in all DOHC neons & cloud cars.

The 3.55 gearing is good for gas mileage, but really sucks behind a dohc motor. l know because l did a 2.4 swap into my SOHC neon. The 3.94 gearing is awesome & wakes up any motor neon.

Check the part number on the tranny to confirm which tranny it is. Neon manual trannys tend to explode when abused.

If u take the time to do a manual swap. Then also search the neon forum for diff pin savers. They r tabs the keep diff pin from sliding out of the diff & exploding out of the tranny. The tabs cost 5 bucks for a pair from chrysler.
