My Astro van is recently ill after 6 years, and 70,000 miles. Lately l have been looking for a replacement, and l found a 1996 Dodge Dakota Extended cab truck with a V8/Auto Trans. It has alot of miles (157,000), but it is ingood condition. The ownership history is very solid. The current owners had it for 3 years, and the last owners owned it for the first 10 years. The current owners are selling because their son went off to college.The asking price is $2,500, and it has newer tires, exhaust, and battery which are hot updates.l might be able to talk the price down though.The thing that im skeptical about is the transmissions in those vehicles. If it works good would it help if l had the pan dropped, and trans flush to prolong the life?
When l first bought my Astro van at 149,000 miles l had the pan dropped/trans flushed, and l never had any problems all those years.

Just drive it. If thereis a problem then l would look into doing flush. You can do it if you want but why mess with it if the history is good.

Have the car inspected by a mechanic you hire.

GM makes some of the best autos around. Dodge ones r alright but only if not beaten & the service performed. If u r concerned than yes take it to a shop & drop the pan & pull the filter. Now take that filter & break it open & look for flakes. If there r very few or none then no clutch problems. If there r a lot of flakes then the clutches r going & will fail in the future (near future). The dodge units do burn easily so check the fluid (on the dipstick) to see if the color is alright.
Otherwise l know of people who've put thousands on dodge trannies & not blown them (best around 250,000).

l would not drop it right now and do it,it may have already been done at one time or another,id drive it and see how it did first,then see if it needed it,usually when you have that done on high mileage vehicles they give problems,especially the dodge transmissions,have someone look that one over real good before you buy it,they may be able to spot something that you might over look ,good luck
